Knee pain is the most common complaint among runners. Proper kinesiology tape application can significantly reduce patellar tracking issues and IT band syndrome.
Why Runners Need Knee Support
Knee pain is the most common complaint among runners, affecting up to 25% of all runners at some point in their training. Whether you are preparing for your first 5K or your tenth marathon, knowing how to correctly apply kinesiology tape to your knee can be the difference between finishing your race and sitting on the sidelines.
Understanding the Anatomy
The knee is a complex hinge joint supported by four major ligaments, two menisci, and a network of tendons and muscles. When taping for running, the primary targets are the patellar tendon, the IT band, and the VMO muscle.
What You Need
One roll of MaxPower KTape (5 cm width), scissors, clean dry skin, and approximately 10 minutes before your run.
Step 1: Prepare the Skin
Clean the area with a dry cloth. Avoid applying tape over broken skin, open wounds, or areas with active rashes. For best adhesion, apply the tape at least 30 minutes before exercise.
Step 2: Patellar Support Strip
Cut a strip approximately 25 cm long. With your knee bent at 90 degrees, anchor the tape just below the kneecap with zero tension. Apply the tape in a U-shape around the outside of the kneecap with 25% stretch, finishing above the kneecap with zero tension at the anchor.
Step 3: VMO Activation Strip
Cut a strip approximately 20 cm long. With the knee straight, anchor just above the inner kneecap with zero tension. Apply upward along the inner thigh with 15% stretch, finishing with zero tension at the top anchor.
Step 4: IT Band Relief Strip
For runners with outer knee pain, cut a 30 cm strip. Anchor at the outer kneecap with zero tension, apply upward along the outer thigh with 10% stretch, finishing with zero tension at the top.
After Application
Rub the tape firmly for 30 seconds to activate the heat-sensitive adhesive. MaxPower KTape can remain in place for 2-3 days, including through showers and light swimming.
When to See a Professional
If your knee pain persists beyond two weeks, worsens during activity, or is accompanied by swelling or instability, consult a sports physiotherapist for a full assessment.
